Attention: 16/17/18 Year Olds

01/30/08

By SAYB Board

SAYB announces a new baseball program for older kids.

Traditionally as players move out of the Shoreview Area Youth Baseball program and into the 16-18 yr old age group, they would participate in a VFW (16 yr old) and the American Legion (17/18 yr old) program.

SAYB has agreed in concept to begin facilitating the VFW program at the 16 yr old level. We are very early in the process and still working out many details. There are numerous VFW rules that are different than the current SAYB program so we need to determine how we will adhere to National VFW rules, while staying true to our community based program. As an example, the birth date cut off and player eligibility rules are different than those used by other SAYB programs.

As of right now, we are planning to have 2 equal teams of players living in the 621 school district that will participate in the VFW program. Depending on the number of players who register and their talent level, the Board may elect to have 2 or more VFW teams or possibly enter a team/s into the MYAS/Gopher State program.

Information will be distributed through both Irondale and Mounds View High School coaches. An e-mail communication will be sent as well, to players who participated in our program as 15 yr olds last year. Please check the SAYB website frequently for further details as they become available.

At the 17-18 yr old level, the plans are less clear. There have been some initial discussions related to how we might support the American Legion program. We have agreed to help in any fashion requested but to be clear, it is not intention to be a competing program with the current American Legion program. We are here to support them however it is deemed appropriate by the high school coaches and the current American Legion Administration. Again, please visit the SAYB website frequently for further details.
